Batak
Batak is 1040 m elevated above sea level and is situated in the valley of the Stara reka, on the sides of the Batak Mountains in the western Rhodope Mountains. Its population is about 4000 people and the town is 35 km distant from Pazardgik, 25 km from Velingrad and 155 km from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Batak was a settled region from ancient times and that is the reason why there are so many Thracians, Romans and Slavs fortresses, bridges and mounds. The name of Batak is mostly connected with the April rebellion (1876) when an enormous ottoman army attacked and burnt down the town and 5000 innocent people were killed, about 2000 of them were burnt alive in the church "St. Nedelya".
Except for the above mentioned church other places of interest are the reserves "Batak", "Beglika", "The Hole" and the artificial lakes "Batak", "Beglika", "Goliam Beglik" and "Shiroka polyana".

Around Batak dam lake there are three camps, disposing of 10 000 beds: Tsigov Chark, Seltse and St. Konstantin, perfect places for relax at every season of the year. Winter sport fans can enjoy the ski path which is 1200 m long and a ski racing path that is 20 km long.

Picturesque scenery, splendid reserves, sight- seeings and water resources are perfect for the development of the region as a tourist destination.
