Kazanlak
Kazanlak is situated in the Valley of Roses, surrounded by the south foot of the Balkan Mountain and the north slopes of Sredna Gora. The Tundja river passes through the valley. Kazanlak has 62 000 habitants and is situated 200 km east of Sofia, 46 km south of Gabrovo, 30 km north of Stara Zagora. Kazanlak is a successor of the ancient Thracian capital Seuthopolis, built by the Thracian King Seuthes III in 6th - 5th centuris BC. Rich Thracian civilization was founded in the valley around the river Tonzos (today Toundja). It was economically connected with Hellas. An ancient Thracian tomb, proving that, was accidentally discovered under a huge mound in 1944.
After 1370, Kazanlak region fell under the Turkish bondage. However, the locals successfully developed their crafts- leather - working, Goldsmith, coppersmith, homespun tailoring, cooperage, and, of course - rose-oil manufacture. The oil-bearing rose was brought from India to the valley where conditions proved exellent.

Today, tourist can visit a museum exposition, representing the rose oil manufacture. A rose festival is organised every year in the first week of June. The festival features picking of roses and their brewage.
