Panagyurishte
The town of Panagyurishte is situated at the foot of the Sashtinska Sredna Gora Mountains, in the Luda Yana river valley. It stands 523 m above sea level. It has 21 000 inhabitants and lies 90 km to the east of Sofia, 42 km to the north of Pazardjik and 32 km to the south of Zlatitsa.
Dozens of mounds in the surroundings testify that the area has been inhabited by Thracian tribes. The world famous Panagyurishte Golden Treasure was founded in one of these mounds in 1949. It dates back to 4th - 3th century BC and consists of 9 vessels: 4 rhytons, shaped as animals` heads, 3 ewers that have women`s (Amazon ) heads, an amphora with a centaur - shaped handle and a phial.

In the XIII century the town was called Kamenograd. In the Turkish yoke it was robbed and burnt down several times despite the privileges it had. Its rapid advance the town experienced in the 18th century thanks to the well- developed cattle- breeding in the region.

It was also a center of the April rebellion in 1876. However, the rebellion failed, Panagjuriste was burnt down and more than 650 people were killed.

Today the spirit of the rebels can be felt in the Historical museum. Other places of interest are the "Assumption of Virgin Mary" church, the Dudekov’s house, Tutev’s house, Djunov’s house and the "Rayna Knqginya" museum- house.

10 km to the northwest of the town is situated the historical place of Oborishte, where in 1876 the revolutionaries took the decision to initiate the April rebellion. Every year on the April 20 Panagyurishte hosts national holidays. There are small hotels, private lodgings and houses in the town.
