PerperikonSituated in the eastern Rhodope Mountains, 15 km. north-east of the city of Kardjali, the ancient cult centre Perperikon stands on a rocky mountain with height 470m.

According to professor Alexander Fol(world famous explorer of the Thracian history) the name of Perperikon derives from a Thracian god of stone Per. In the stone city there is an acropolis, situated on the heist part of the hill, a holy castle, situated under the acropolis, neighborhoods, temples, fortress wall.

Traces of life from Perperikon have been found to be 8 thousand years old, from the epoch of neolith, but there is no preserved architecture.

Most authors investigating the issue describe the altar in the sanctuary to be with a strange oval form, which can be seen even today because it has somewhat preserved it’s form as proof that the famous in ancient years Oracle is situated right here. It was right on this altar where the ritual with wine and fire use to happen and according to the height of the flames the prophecy was made.

The father of history Herodotus, mentions Perperikon in his compositions. He narrates that only the Satrians who inhabited the Rhodope and were keepers of Dionysus’ mountain chose to ignore Xeroxes whose massive invasion force was making it’s way along the Aegean coast and made many Thracian tribes pledge their allegiance to him. Having in mind from where the Xeroxes passed with his army, from there it’s easy to see the highest ridge of the southern Rhodope.

In Dionysus’ sanctuary, two interesting, from a historical point of view, things have happened. One of them is that, Alexander the Great visits and it is there that the Oracle tells that he will be the ruler of the ancient world. The other event is described in detail by the roman historian Svetonius Tranquil. He narrates how in front of that same altar, where Alexander the Great once bowed, stands the roman Guy Octavius. When he asked the Oracle of the faith of his infant, the flames burst so high as to the sky. According to the ancient fortune tellers this meant that his infant would do great deeds. The infant was born a boy Octavius Augustus, the first roman emperor.
