The certificate is awarded to guesthouses and family hotels which have passed successfully compliance assessment with the European criteria of quality accommodation where the negative impact on nature is brought to a minimum.
The hosts are most frequently families from the local communities who are familiar with the vicinity and are able to present to guests the beauty of surrounding nature, the charm of traditional everyday life and the peculiarities of local cuisines. They do their best to save natural resources avoid pollution of the environment and encourage guests to travel in a responsible manner with respect of nature.
In 2008 BAAT held the first product quality assessment of guesthouses and family hotels in Bulgaria. The distinctions are awarded in compliance with the sustainable tourism criteria of ECEAT - the European Centre for Ecological and Agricultural Tourism, leading European organisation in the field of small-scale sustainable tourism with a special attention to rural areas and organic farming.
Every site holding a Green Home Certificate strives to save energy, treat water, reduce waste, separate waste collection, to offer organic products, preserve local architecture and cultural heritage and present typical local cuisine.
The next step under this project is the Green Home Club Card, which will provide discounts at the sites. BAAT expressed hope that it will be recognized by the Association of Bio-Traders in April and its holders will be able to also shop at a discount in organic product stores.
