Bulgaria’s Bansko Winter Resort Celebrates Traditional Food and Wine

BalkanTravellers.com

11 February 2010 | In addition to its ski slopes, Bulgaria’s largest winter resort – Bansko, is also known for its heavy food and red wine. This Friday, visitors and guests of the resort will be able to sample its traditional mezes, or appetizers, and wine, the municipality announced.
Under the motto “Sea, Hear and Taste,” the traditional celebration, now in its third year, will take place at 5:30pm at Bankso’s central square. In addition to sampling the Bansko dishes, guests will be entertained by a folklore programme.

Those in the dark may find Bansko’s food and wine specialties a tad heavy – according to a joke, meat in the Pirin Mounatin town is usually served with a side of meat, but connoisseurs know and appreciate the joy of some red wine and a hearty meat dish, especially when consumed in front of a fireplace after a day spent skiing on the slopes.

In addition to their ingredients, the Bankso dishes are also known for their peculiar names, such as starets, meaning 'old man', which refers to a kind of thick sausage, or karvavista, the name of a blood sausage.
