Bulgaria budget surplus charging towards 500 mln levs

05.3.2008
Bearly into 2008 and Bulgaria's budget surplus is notching up record increases due to improved budget revenue performance.

Data of the finance ministry showed Tuesday that the budget surplus stood at 440 mln levs at the end of January which compares with around 100 mln lev a year ago.

In early 2007, when Bulgaria had just joined the EU, VAT regulations were updated and that led to a delay of about a month in the payment of tax on the sale of goods and services.

The budget surplus this early in 2008 is also helped by the hike in the fuel, cigarette, electricity, coal and coke excise that has just taken effect.

This year, the Bulgarian government has budgeted the actual surplus it will be pursuing - 3% of GDP, and not an underestimated target.
