May 12 (BTA) - Between January 1 and May 10, 2020, Bulgaria produced 15,517,362 MWh of electricity, down by 10.69 per cent from the 17,373,838 MWh produced in the like period of 2019, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) reported on its website. Year on year, domestic electricity consumption decreased by 2.78 per cent in the January 1 - May 10 period, from 15,028,819 MWh in 2019 to 14,611,320 MWh in 2020. Bulgaria exported 2,672,894 MWh of electricity between January 1 and May 10, 2020, which was 23.18 per cent less than the 3,479,498 MWh sold abroad in the comparable period of 2019. To make up for this, electricity imports into this country increased by 55.74 per cent for the same period, year on year, from 1,134,478 MWh in 2019 to 1,766,852 MWh in 2020. By May 3, electricity imports rose 62.23 per cent, while exports declined by 22.43 per cent, but since than exports have edged up and imports have edged down. The baseline generating capacities, such as the Kozloduy N-Plant and the two US-owned coal-fired power plants in the Maritsa Basin: AES Galabovo and ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3, produced 13.29 per cent less electricity between January 1 and May 10, 2020 compared to the same period of last year. The share of electricity from renewable sources increased by 18.90 per cent in the transmission network and by 13.43 per cent in the distribution network.
