Bulgarian drug maker Sopharma continues regional expansion

Sopharma, the Bulgarian pharmaceuticals company, said it has secured the approval of the Serbian anti-trust authority to acquire a controlling stake in Serbian peer Ivancic&Sons.

'We are always looking for opportunities to increase out regional footprint,' Sopharma executive director Ognian Donev told Dnevnik in an interview recently.

At the time, the Sopharma CEO said the company was awaiting regulatory approval for the Serbian deal.

Donev could not be reached for additional information before Dnevnik went to print on Thursday.

The Ivancic&Sons portfolio features 21 products and four pharmacies in Serbian capital Belgrade.

Some three years ago, Sopharma pursued unsuccessfully the acquisition of Serbian drug distributor Srbolek.

The Bulgarian company owns assets in Romania, the Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic region.

The Sopharma consolidated assets totaled 430 mln levs at the end of 2007. Group revenues jumped 62% to 363 mln levs with net profit rising 17% to 32 mln levs.
