Bulgarian emigrants send US$2 bn to families back home
26.3.2008This includes only the money sent through bank transactions of other official ways, while the real sum is probably way higher as most Bulgarians prefer to carry the money themselves or use it to buy goods. The money sent by emigrants to Bulgaria is around one fifth of all foreign investments in the country made during 2007.
According to the World Bank emigrants worldwide have sent a total of US$318 billion in their home countries. This money is the main source of foreign currency for many developing countries, the report notes.
Countries like Moldova and Tajikistan owe 36% of their GDP to emigrant transactions. India is the country whose emigrants have sent the biggest sum back home - US$27 billion, followed by China, the Philippines, Mexico and France.
