Dubai buildings 'might introduce green roofing'

08.9.2009
An official has revealed that there are plans to introduce roofing in Dubai that will help cool properties in the emirate.

Hussain Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, revealed that while eco-friendly roofing is not currently compulsory, it is an issue that is being looked into, reports Gulf News.

He noted that one of the most significant uses of energy in the emirate is air conditioning units and water heaters.

The expert noted per capita, Dubai is the largest producer of domestic waste in the world.

By encouraging green buildings, he said the amount of energy used in Dubai could be reduced.

"Many developed countries are doing this, but we could perhaps be the first Middle Eastern nation to introduce the concept," he commented.

"These roofs, made of three materials, would reflect the heat instead of absorbing it."

This comes in the same week as Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan revealed that the United Arab Emirates would provide support for the International Renewable Energy Agency by improving its strategy, targets and future plans, Gulf News reported.
