Electricity Price in Bulgaria May Rise 50 Per Cent by 2030 - Expert

17.12.2019
Sofia, December 17 (BTA) - The price of electricity in Bulgaria may rise 50 per cent by 2030, sustainable economy expert Dimiter Stoyanov predicted. He specified that this will be the effect of attaining the contemplated EU target of a 50 per cent cut of carbon emissions. If this is done, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to cost 40 euro/tonne in 2030. Stoyanov was speaking at a forum here on Tuesday, organized by the Balkans Sustainable Development Institute and hosted by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Integrating the energy markets and power transmission networks in line with the EU sustainable development and climate transition goals alone will cost around 1 trillion euro over the next 10 years. The expert specified that the EU's next research and innovation framework programme, Horizon Europe (2021-2027), will spent 30 billion euro on financing directly the energy transformation over the next seven and eight years. Stoyanov sees a positive ramification for Bulgaria in that the country has not yet made full use of the potential of some sectors and can shift it to others. One example is the possibility that the ICT sector can offer for network digitalization, cyber security, etc., of Bulgaria's energy- and resource-intensive industries, including power generation. The expert stressed that rising to these challenges will require the concerted efforts of industry, academe, NGOs and power-holders. NV/LG Source: Sofia, http://www.bta.bg/en/c/DF/id/2122910
