Situation along border checkpoint

06.12.2010
Sofia. A section of main road E-79 between capital Sofia and Kulata checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Greek border has sunk due to the high level of the Struma River forcing the border police to redirect the traffic for Greece to Ilinden border checkpoint. The vehicular and railway traffic between Sofia and Kulata checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Greek border has been terminated completely and there are alternative routes for those traveling from and to Greece. These are: Gotse Delchev- Bansko-Razlog-Predela-Simitli and vice versa.
The Interior Ministry alarms drivers to be vigilant at the road sections with highest number of road accidents – the E-79 international road – in the sections of the villages of Dzherman, Usoyka, close to the carting track at the exit of the town of Blagoevgrad to Simitli, at the Kresna Gorge – Sandanski – the road fork to Marikostinovo – Kulata border checkpoint; Bansko – Ilinden border checkpoint.
The District Interior Ministry Directorate – Blagoevgrad alarmed that traffic on E-79 in the Sofia-Kulata section is intensive.
There are repair works done in the Dobrinishte-Gotse Delchev section. Traffic on Blagievgrad0Gotse-Delchev-Drama is also intensive.
There is a risk of falling stones close to the village of Mesta.
There are video surveillance cameras at the exit/entrance to the city of Blagievgrad, and on the road to Dyakovo Lake, close to Mursalevo and at the tunnel close to the town of Dupnitsa.
Traffic of freights vehicles at the Kapitan Andreevo-Kapikule border checkpoint, at the entrance to Bulgaria, will be hampered over the installation os new control system for freight vehicles, in compliance with the Schengen requirements. Border Police advises drivers travelling to Turkey to use the Lesovo- Hamzabeyli border checkpoint.
There are preconditions for road accidents on the Burgas-Malko Tarnovo road and at the border checkpoints at the Bulgarian-Turkish border because the road surface has collapsed.
There is new organization in the traffic through the Kalotina border checkpoint. Cars with EU license plates and EU citizens, including Bulgarian vehicles, would pass through without receiving a single electronic card and won’t be required to stop and buy vignette stickers from the Road Permits and Fees Management office at the checkpoints. European citizens will have to buy vignette stickers upon entering the country, at the nearest gas stations.
There is also new organization in the traffic through Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint. Non-EU vehicles pass through three detached corridors. They will receive a single electronic card.
