Stargate Maritime co to offer ship management services
15.2.2008Bulgarian company Stargate Maritime, a unit of Japan's Òaiyo Nippon Kisen Co Ltd. (TNKC), said it plans to offer ship management services on the local market.
At the moment, the company takes care of the placement of Bulgarian marine officers on vessels managed by TNKC parent K-Line.
Ship managers handle aspects like crewing, maintenance and day to day operations, giving the ship owner time to concentrate on cargo booking.
According to Stargate Maritime manager Andrian Evtimov, the Bulgarian sea transportation market lacks a pure-play ship manager.
The company will initially provide management services to the 12 or so K-Line vessels manned by Bulgarian marine officers that frequent European ports.
Evtimov said the development of the project is snagged by inadequate air travel options that would not allow the management crew to reach the intended vessel in time.
In his view, a workable target for Stargate's full transformation into a ship manager is 2009.
