Vonn, Riesch look to extend downhill domination

10.1.2011
ALTENMARKT-ZAUCHENSEE, Austria — Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch will try to extend their downhill domination on Saturday and stretch their joint World Cup winning streak in the discipline to 13.

The American and her German best friend have combined to win every World Cup race in the sport's fastest discipline since Andrea Fischbacher of Austria finished first in Bansko, Bulgaria, in February 2009. Since then, Vonn has won eight times, Riesch four.

With Vonn dominating the final downhill training on Friday, it's hard to see a different winner this time.

"Every speed race is important to me," said the three-time overall champion, who trails her main rival Riesch in the overall standings. "Now even more as I want to gain some ground on Maria."

Riesch, who won two of three downhills this season, leads Vonn by 833 to 647 points going into the speed races this weekend, with a super-G held Sunday. But the two-time Olympic champion said it's too early to call her a favorite for the overall title.

"A lot can happen. Lindsey needs to win two, three times and she's right up there again," Riesch said.

The German built her margin over Vonn by consistently scoring points in the technical races. Riesch took second place in four slaloms and a giant slalom, and earned a total of 488 points in these disciplines. Vonn scored just 157, and is still looking for a first career podium finish in giant slalom.

"My giant slalom is going really well, I had my best results in two years," Vonn said. "I finished seventh twice, that's OK. I am pretty satisfied."

Vonn started her slalom season by finishing sixth in Levi, Finland, and eighth in Aspen, Colorado.

"After that, there was little time to train and I lost my self belief in slalom," she said. "It's difficult because when Maria is racing so well, it looks like I don't."

Riesch said she finally feels confident in all disciplines.

Her breakthrough came in the speed disciplines when she won a downhill and a super-G in the same weekend in Haus im Ennstal, Austria, in 2004. Later she started dominating the slalom races. Now she's found a proper balance.

"I am definitely a more complete ski racer now than I was last season," she said. "But in the end, it's all about World Cup points."

Riesch also has the world championships to look forward in her hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in five weeks.

Vonn said her main priority remains with the overall World Cup.

"To win it four times in a row, that's my challenge," Vonn said. "The worlds are a different story. Sure, a medal would be great, but for my career the overall World Cup is more important right now."
